And Now, A Word From Our Sponsors

I guarantee that post title will scare away any potential readers!

Most people familiar with me are already aware of this... I'm weird. But, let me give you a specific example why: I've always had an affinity for "popular culture" of ages gone by. Since about the age of 12 or 13 I have been a nut for all things concerned with the 1940's through the mid 1960's. I'm not talking about music; I do listen to music  of that era primarily, but NOT popular music. No, what I'm referring to is the fashion, transportation, design, architecture, decor, art, movies, and even... commercials. I have tons of radio commercials and DVDs of television commercials. I'll sit down and watch hours of commercials to the dismay of my family. They're fascinating to me.  But, the interesting thing to me is that I have found that I need to bump up my "cool calendar", because I have come to realize that my fondness for said popular culture (as described in brief above) extends into the early to mid 70's - my childhood.

I've known about YouTube for several years. I even set up an account a few years ago for the sole purpose of uploading some video footage from a gig, but never again logged into that account or spent much time on the site at all... until a few weeks ago. I logged into my account (thankfully my browser remembered my log-on), customized my profile, and decided to see what it can do. I've been watching all sorts of great stuff from Johnathan Winters clips, to Lawrence Welk, to killer 60's Garage combo footage, to trailers from some of my favorite movies. Then I discovered the whole "channel" subscription deal, and found some great folks out there posting old TV commercials!

I have found tons that I love and wanted to post here, but I'll stick with one in particular. This is a Slinky commercial from the 70's that I remember. It's not the greatest commercial. It's not funny, or even clever. What it does have is green SHAG CARPET! I've told my wife for the last 11 years that I want green shag carpet; she won't let me have it, or wood paneling on the walls. At least I have commercials like these - that's the closest I'll get to my shag carpet.

Do you suffer from the same ailment as I? Leave me a comment here and let me know I'm not the only one. Also, find me on YouTube and send me some recommendations.

  1. I love the old tv commercials, but the radio commercials are what I'm hooked on. You should make a Humyo account @ humyo.com it's an online storage system. You can upload files & Download files that people send you. I'll trade you some awesome new bands that would love to be played if you think the shoe fits on your show, for some good ol' radio clips...for business reasons, of course.

  3. That is one bright green carpet. Think I can see Mrs. Kaiser's reasoning on not wanting that one. We lived in a house FULL of deep shag carpet with different colors in every room. My sister and I had a groovy mix of hot pink, pink and lavendar. My older sister has sissy yellow, my younger brother some lite blue, but my older brother's bedroom was the best. His was an array of oranges that matched his metallic orange drum set!! I loved his room!

  4. Martha, was there any wood paneling in this house? So far it sounds like a castle to me... or maybe Mt. Olympus!!

  5. Not in this one, but the home I just moved out of was wood panelling heaven! It had the most obnoxious red, orange & black kinda paisley carpet. I LOVED IT!! Think I have a pic somewhere.

  6. Awesome! Merge them two together... and add the 3rd necessity (which I failed to mention): SPLIT LEVEL - I love stepping down a few stairs to the living room - and you'd have my dream home!! But, it would have to have been constructed betwixt the early 40's and late 60's. But, I ain't particular.

  7. That's exactly what we had! Split level. Built in the 60s. My brother had his own room & bath on the lower end level and entry through the garage. The house is still there, sitting on a little hill in Nuevo, California!

  9. I have a Flickr account, but have never really used it. I just found the pics of the pad I recently moved out of and scanned them. I'll post them up there in a bit fer ya. I had the whole basement apartment. Really nice, but dark with all the panelling. I truly loved it.
